Did you know that where you're located geographically can actually have a correlation on whether or not you get diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, like what city you live in, what state, what part of the world? It's true. Did you also know that who you live with, who you spend the most time with, who you surround yourself with can actually have a direct influence on your blood sugars as the type 1 diabetic? It's also true. And by the end of this episode, I'm going to share with you how to know who you should spend less time with and who you should spend more time with if you want to have better blood sugars automatically. Keep going and keep up the fight. Now, if we haven't met, my name is Matt Vandevecht. I live with type 1 diabetes. I'm also a certified master fitness trainer, nutritionist, and quite frankly, I'm obsessed with blood sugars, type 1 diabetes, insulin pharmacokinetics, and everything that has to do with blood sugar management. And I had this realization not too long ago while I was dealing with a heat wave we've got in San Diego right now. It's absurdly hot and it's not supposed to be, right? It's been like a hundred degrees, and our air conditioning is going 24-7. Now, the issue with that is that our house does not have great insulation, and it works so hard just to keep it cool enough because we've got a newborn and uh an almost five-year-old who would complain if it was not the perfect temperature. But quite frankly, it's me as well. Uh, I like having my temperature at or below 75. Gets above 75, I get uncomfy. Call me whatever you will. All right. Uh, I'm a Sandy Agin. I've lived elsewhere, but I like my temperature to be perfect. All right. So, because of that, we've got our air conditioning on, climate control to the max, and it's working overtime. And this made me realize something that you've probably heard before. Your external environment influences your internal behaviors, your defaults, your patterns, your habits, and beyond, which can have a quite a significant impact on your overall lifestyle. Now, with blood sugars, this is absolutely true, where the people that you spend the most time with are going to influence how you live your life. And, you know, growing up, we hear this from our parents like, make good friends, make good decisions. And it's because they knew that whoever you make friends with is going to have an influence on the decisions that you make. Now, the challenge with that is that uh they can't control it. However, with type 1 diabetes, you can control the inputs, which means you can control the outputs or your blood sugars. Now, I'll dive a little deeper into the story that I had for you, and then you'll understand how to manipulate blood sugars. And ultimately, by the end of this video, exactly what you need to do to make blood sugars easier by default. And that's what I want to get you to because blood sugars are hard enough to manage as it is. Type 1 diabetes, it's crazy complicated. Right? Let's just acknowledge that. Even if I have been able to maintain above 90% time and range for the last seven consecutive years while raising a family, building a business, becoming a globally ranked Iron Man athlete, eating all the fun foods and traveling the world, it's still hard. All right. Let's just actually be honest with ourselves. There's a lot to it with over 50 variables that affect blood sugars up and down. We don't need to make it harder on ourselves by doing what I'm going to share with you. All right. So in this heat wave, we've got our climate control or our thermostat working overtime because our house does not have great insulation. So because of that, it's working super hard. It keeps it nice. But the reality is the external temperature, the sun, beating down on our house is making it very difficult to keep the climate controlled. And when it comes down to it, there's a couple different key factors. So, first one, external. If I want the house to be 75, if it's too hot or too cold, the thermostat has to work extra hard, the climate control. But that thermostat doesn't have to work as hard if the insulation is in place. So you see the three levels here, right? We've got external environment, we've got the insulation that guards from the external environment, and we've got the internal locus of control, essentially, but it's the climate control, right? So the ability to shift or to pivot or to adapt in real time. So when we look at this from a blood sugar perspective, we have our external environment, the people that we hang out with, the places that we go to that have an influence on our blood sugar management. And if it's radically different than what you want, you're going to have a hard time. As an example, if you hang out with people who obsess over drinking soda, you're going to have a hard time not being around soda. Soda, very hard to manage blood sugars with. If all of your friends are overweight and refuse to exercise, you're going to have a hard time breaking the mold and starting exercise because they're probably going to mock you, think it's silly. Why would you exercise, right? Because you're breaking the mold. You're not part of the norm. And they probably feel a bit self-conscious that you're doing something to better your health. So your external environment is influencing your behavior. Now, insulation in this example of our house, but also in the example of blood sugars, are your lifestyle habits, your patterns, your routines, and your identity. So even in an environment that's not going to provide results for you and make success inevitable, you can still create that barrier, the insulation, where if your lifestyle habits are strong enough, if your identity in the end results that you're pursuing are strong enough, you will still reach your goals. But that insulation has to be strong and in place. And that can be installed, right? You can go through a conference or a mindset course or read a book. You can install proper insulation that allows you to still make progress in spite of a bad environment. However, it does also require climate control, the third layer to this. So the ability to adapt, the ability to change your situation. So even if it's a hundred degrees outside, I can have 75 degrees inside if I have proper insulation andor proper climate control. So if I have a bad environment with friends, I can still reach my goals, but I'm going to be trying extra hard. And it's required that I have proper insulation and the climate control. In other words, the lifestyle habits and the identity pieces, and then the climate control being your strategy.

So if I have proper blood sugar strategy and proper lifestyle variables, habits, identity pieces, I know who I am and what I want to be, I can mix around with some of the degenerates, you know, people who aren't on the same path towards success as me. And I will still find success. But it will feel harder than it needs to be. It's an uphill battle, right? Just like it's 100 degrees outside. I want it to be 75. We can keep our house at 75 degrees. However, our climate control system, our HVAC, is going nonstop. And we also don't have great insulation, so that makes it a bit harder, right? So everything that you can add makes your success feel more inevitable. Now, in a perfect situation, you have the strategies in place, the lifestyle habits in place, and you have the environment that's not only supportive, but also challenges you to grow. Those three together make success inevitable. So when you understand how to manipulate your life or level up intentionally, success just becomes part of the journey. You don't have to wonder if blood sugars are going to get easier. Now, said differently, I'll give you some examples. An identity piece would be an athlete. So the insulation is somebody who identifies as an athlete, maybe they're an Olympian, okay? That insulation means that they can mix with the wrong crowds who don't work out and they're still gonna work out because they identify as an athlete. An athlete is just the kind of person who works out. They're not gonna miss their workouts or their practices because that's who they are, right? And then the strategy would be what types of workouts enable them to become the better athlete and you create a little nice cycle in the middle. But if that same athlete were to switch out the wrong crowd with the right crowd, they go hang out with other Olympians and coaches and uh professors and kinesiology, right? They're going to see better results. It's going to have a compounding effect. So your goal then, if you want to see success with blood sugars, is yes, to have the right strategies, which I mean, I have my bestseller book on that. You can grab strategy straight from. Everything that's required to hit 90% time and range is in that book and in the additional resources that come with it for free. So strategy is there. Insulation can also be installed, right? So the book can install the strategies. Insulation, your lifestyle habits, your identity, your routines. In our private communities, we have our renegade identity. It's on my shirt, right? It's also on all the hats that I wear. The identity piece is strong. It can be installed. We can install that for you, but the environment piece we cannot install for you. And it must be a decision that you make. See, and then the people that you surround yourself with may or may not be supportive of your journey. They might tell you, this is where it gets tricky. They might tell you that they support you, but do their actions fall in line with what their words are saying? Oh, we support you eating healthy. Okay, then why do you keep buying sleeves of Oreos? You know those are my favorite, right? Uh, well, then why don't you go on the runs with me? You promised you were gonna work out with me. Do their actions line up? Just an honest question you have to ask yourself. Because the reality is the more of these fall in line, like I said, if the external environment, we'll give the house example. If it's 75 degrees outside, I don't have to try to turn the climate control on. I don't have to have insulation. I can leave all the doors and windows open. It does not matter what I do because the environment was so perfect. It was so in line with the outcome that I wanted that I just existed. It was inevitable success and basically effortless, right? Similarly, if you surround yourself with the right people doing the right things on the same trajectory of growth that you seek, success will feel inevitable. You will be pulled up to their level. It is literally an energy thing. Like if you get in the same room as the type of people that you want to be like, you will find yourself pulled up to their level. Even if it's a completely different environment that you are so uncomfortable in because it's just unfamiliar, over the course of a day, two days, maybe three days, you will find yourself mirroring them. Like there are things actually called mirror neurons in your brain. You will seek to copy those around you who you want to be like. And even if you don't want to be like them, you'll find yourself copying because we want to be accepted. It's a society thing, right? You want to have social acceptance. So your brain will start to mirror those around you to be accepted. So if you don't want to be like the people that are around you, or here's a hard one if you don't have people around you that you want to be like, as an example, if you don't have type one diabetes experts or even other type ones around you, you have no one to mirror. You are in this alone, which means you have to depend entirely on the climate control, which is your strategies for blood sugars, and the insulation, which is your lifestyle habits. And you will be fighting an uphill battle. You might be able to hold on and white knuckle it and maintain it, but it will feel hard. And that's where we see people burning out. So, in order to make this feel inevitable and easy, you have to put yourself in the right environment that supports you so that you don't have to try as hard. See, people ask me all the time, Matt, how do I get to 90% time range? And I tell you, you can read that book right there. You can join one of our coaching programs because I privately coach type ones as well. I can install the right strategies, the right blood sugar formulas. I can install the right beliefs, the right habits, the right routines. I can do these things for you and with you, but I cannot install the right environment if you don't choose to be around us. And without that environment, if the environment is completely off base, you will reach your goals with our strategies, but it will feel like an uphill battle if you isolate yourself. Trust me when I say this, growth becomes so much easier, and dare I say, enjoyable when you have the environmental piece in place. So surround yourself with the kind of people that you want to be like or that you can learn from. This is this is honestly one of the biggest shortcuts that I've found in my own life, in business, in athletics, in my Iron Man journey. I went and found people who had already achieved the thing that I was wanting to achieve or were on the same journey towards achieving that thing, and it made a world of a difference. Having a buddy of mine to train with, because I convinced him through a lot of effort to do the Iron Man with me. When I first signed up for Iron Man California, I was like, hey man, you got to do this thing with me. He had never done one either. And he was like, No, you're insane. About a month later, I had convinced him. We did it together, we trained every single week together, and it actually made it fun. And we are now both Ironman, which is insane to think and to say. When I wanted to reach 90% time and range, I reached out to endocrinologists, to doctors, to dietitians, to people who had reached better blood sugar control in different areas, and I connected with them. I learned from them and I mirrored them. See, if it's 110 degrees outside, I can get the thermostat basically wherever I want, but that electricity bill is going to be high. I have to pay it down somewhere, right? If you want inevitable success, you have to get around the kind of people who are either on the same journey or have already accomplished the same result. That's it. But the exciting part is you already know where they are. They're online, which is not as strong as in person, and they're in person, which is way stronger than online, but a little bit more friction. So if you can get in the same room as other type ones or as other type one experts, you will grow exponentially faster. Now we've researched this. It typically takes between one and three days of in-person interactions to learn from and to absorb with whatever level of expertise you're aiming for, whether it's a business conference, a health conference, a mindset conference, or in this case, a type one diabetes conference. Now, as luck would have it, we actually have our first ever in-person event because we've seen what transformations look like online and we know the exponential growth that happens in person from other conferences that I've been traveling around to over the years. And this specific conference is six years in the making. It will be in San Diego. It will be in a better time of the year where it's not 100 degrees. So you don't have to deal with this crazy thermostat madness. And it will be filled with people who are on the same journey and to people who have accomplished these end results. Now, again, we can install the strategies. You can buy my book, you can go through our courses. We can install the beliefs, the lifestyle habits, the habits, the routines, the identity pieces. I can't install the environment without your buy-in. You have to be the one that's willing to take that step to shift your environment. And that is the hardest one because it requires you to physically relocate yourself temporarily, which is it's an interruption. Let's just be real, let's call it what it is. You have to get up, get on a flight or in a car, depending on how far away you are, go to a new location that's going to feel uncomfortable, and then sit in that location, make new friends, new connections, and then hope it works. But the reality is, this has been proven time and time again. You don't have to wonder if it's gonna work. The only thing you have to wonder is how good can it get? Now, a hundred other people in this room, of which we've already sold a lot of tickets to this event. I don't know how many are left. I do know we still have tickets left, but at this point, we're flying our team out, a team of experts. I will be teaching over the course of three days, and it's gonna be a transformational event, one that has never been done before. We're teaching new concepts, we're inviting people from around the world to have influence on this group because in person, growth is compounded. So if that's of interest, I want you to be there. Consider this my personal invite to you to get into a room with other type one diabetics to learn how to not only master blood sugars, but also to do it in a way that's in alignment with your lifestyle. So we can install the strategies, which are blood sugar formulas, we can install the beliefs, identities, and habits so that your lifestyle matches, but is also in a way that is in alignment with what you're looking for, so it doesn't feel unsustainable. And we can put you in the right environment so that growth is compounded. Your environment sets the bar, it sets your standards. If you've never been around people who reach 80, 90, 100% time and range before, you're not gonna know that's possible, or at the very least, that it's possible for you. See, my private clients are gonna be in this room as well. They've already bought their tickets to the event, they've already got their flights, their hotels. They will be in the room. You're gonna have conversations with people who not only maintain above 90% time range just like me, but do so while living with spontaneity, flexibility, freedom. They play with their kids, their grandkids, they travel, they eat what they want. When you're around those people, it challenges your limiting beliefs. It tells your brain maybe there is more to this thing than just surviving with type one diabetes. Maybe it is true that I can actually thrive with type 1 diabetes. If you want to see what's possible, do whatever you can to get in that room. If that sounds good to you, I want you to use the link in the description. You can also go straight to t1dmastery live.com. We'll get you your tickets, we'll get you all set up, and we'll welcome you with open arms. It's gonna be amazing. I cannot wait until we get there. Remember, you can still reach your results without that, but you're gonna be fighting an uphill battle. It gets much harder when the environment externally is not supportive of the internal shift that you're trying to make. You can do it, but you're gonna feel like you're burning out, like you're working overtime. I've been there, which is also why I created this event selfishly, because I know that I too need this environment to see growth, connection, and community. Feel supported in a way that makes my end results and my success feel inevitable. So you can use the description link or go to t1dmastery live.com. I look forward to seeing you in San Diego and keep up the fight.
